WHAT IS
?
LabSand is our patented hydrophobic sand that is used to collect noninvasive urine samples from animals in laboratory and research settings. LabSand has been validated in numerous studies by large pharmaceutical companies (GSK & Charles River among others) and has been promoted as a more efficient alternative to invasive, expensive and stressful methods of urine sample collection. LabSand does not affect any parameters of the collected urine sample. Please visit our Downloads section below to view our LabSand validation studies.
With All These Benefits
Why Use
What if there was an easier way to collect urine samples from mice and rats? LabSand is a patented hydrophobic sand that allows scientists, researchers and technicians to passively collect urine samples from animals, LabSand will help you not only save time and money, but also elevate animal welfare standards at the same time, We believe our more humane method of urine

LabSand replaces the rat or mice’s bedding, so they can stay in their natural environment during the urine sample collection process. To use, simply spread the hydrophobic sand inside the cage or housing unit, and allow the animal to urinate freely. The urine sample will stay suspended on the sands surface, making collection easy. LabSand is validated and will not change any urine parameters. This one time use product is easily disposed, and can be gamma irradiated if necessary.
ANIMAL WELFARE
Metabolic cages have become the industry standard method for laboratory animal urine sample collection despite their numerous disadvantages. Coastline Global has developed a highly recommended alternative solution: LabSand. LabSand provides the easiest method for urine sample collection utilizing all natural, nontoxic, patented hydrophobic sand, with endless benefits:
METABOLIC CAGE
- Maintains the HIGHEST standards of animal welfare through its passive collection method.
- Remove time and costs associated with regulatory processes.
- Price sensitive and does not require any assembly or maintenance.
- Reduce sample collection time with a disposable method that allows researchers to collect stress-free samples, straight from the species housing unit with Immediate delivery.
- Uncontaminated and reliable experiment results.
- Validated and recommended by top companies such as GSK.
- Low Animal Welfare standards – mice are housed in metabolism cages for 16 hours, which induces stress, agitation, and suffering.
- Regulated procedure under the Animals Scientific Procedures Act.
- High costs associated with purchasing and construction of metabolic cages, and maintenance of equipment and consumable.
- Takes valuable time for technician to set up, dismantle, wash and reassemble, while lacking versatility and taking up necessary space.
- Long lead times for delivery of cages and approval of purchases.
HOW TO USE
STEP 1
Empty the contents of one or more 300g bags of LabSand onto a clean and dry surface. Just enough to cover the area will suffice to suspend the urine on the sand surface.
STEP 2
Allow the animal to urinate freely on the sand. LabSand is single use and should only be used by one animal each time to avoid cross contamination.
STEP 3
Remove the animal from the sand and collect with a pipette and vial, or, dip a diagnostic strip on the suspended droplet.
Important Notes
- Do not reuse LabSand.
- Safety first: plastic bags can be dangerous.
- To avoid suffocation, keep away from babies and children.
- Do not eat LabSand.
FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Each LabSand box contains 3 bags of hydrophobic sand (300g each) and 3 sets of collection tools (pipettes and vials).
Depending on the size of the cage or other surface of collection, you should use one or more of the three bags included inside the kit. A relatively thin layer of sand will suffice in obtaining a sample.

Depending on the size of the urine sample, it should not be absorbed into the feet or hair of the animal being tested. To read more about this, click our validation study.
If the surface is clean, a sample can still be collected.
The urine will stay on top until it all evaporates. We recommend collecting the urine sample as quickly as possible since some test results will differ if not collected immediately. Occasionally in a laboratory setup, if there is air conditioning, it will make the air very dry which can expedite the evaporation process. Therefore, we recommend to collect the sample promptly in timely manner.
LabSand is a single-use diagnostic kit and can be easily disposed of after a single urine sample has been collected.
No. The sand will be damaged during the autoclaving process and will lose its hydrophobic properties.
Yes, the sand is specially made to be suitable for gamma radiation or ozone sterilization process.
LabSand is made from highly treated quarry sand which goes through an extensive process of sterilization and hydrophobic coating during the manufacturing process. Once this happens, no biological life forms or bacteria can develop on the surface of the sand.
No. LabSand does not change any of the properties of the urine sample collected. Extensive studies have been conducted and there is no chemical reaction between the hydrophobic sand and any of the urine that beads up on top of it. In addition, several well-known veterinarians and research facilities have conducted their own studies and have submitted multiple samples to commercial laboratories. All urinalysis results were identical between their invasive collection methods and LabSand. Click here to view a validation study that provides detailed urinalysis information and photos.
Yes! LabSand is made of natural ingredients which are environmentally friendly and recyclable.
No. The dust is from the hydrophobic sand and will not change the urine sample properties in any way. Click here to view a validation study that demonstrates that LabSand provides a clean uncontaminated urine sample. Moreover, LabSand dust particles do not resemble other parameters which may be tested and as such, will not lead to an incorrect diagnosis.
LabSand is non-toxic and safe if consumed. If any digestion occurs, it is not an amount significant enough to impart any negative effect.
Coastline Global is committed to elevating animal welfare standards in the global laboratory community. Because it is noninvasive, this product is harmless as compared to a stressful collection method like metabolic caging. LabSand will produce exactly the same results as the industry standard for laboratory animal urine collection.
LabSand is a noninvasive method that eliminates trauma and stress when trying to obtain a urine sample.
LabSand was tested by GlaxoSmithKline over an 8-month study period, which concluded that the product is suitable for use when collecting urine samples from animals in laboratory and research environments. Additionally, the hydrophobic sand has been approved by thousands of veterinarians and technicians around the world and has gone through extensive research and testing at major universities. Many industry leaders have recommended LabSand at major laboratory conferences around the world. There are several veterinary universities currently using Coastline Global’s suite of noninvasive urine collection products in their research programs. Click here to view a validation study that demonstrates that these products provide a clean uncontaminated urine sample.
LabSand sand is sterile but once the bag is opened and the product is exposed to air, it should be used shortly after.
