Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is included in the CheckUp Kit for Cats?

Each kit includes 2 lb (900g) of patented hydrophobic sand, 1 pipette, 1 vial, 2 identical diagnostic testing strips, and a results reading card

  • When is the best time to collect urine for a test?

It is recommended to collect the first urine of the day (in the morning), or two hours after a daytime meal.

  • Why should I use CheckUp?

By using CheckUp, you can better understand the overall health of your pet. Cats hide their pain, and you may not know that they are suffering from a condition. By using CheckUp, you can catch a condition before its too late.

  • Does CheckUp replace a visit to the veterinarian?

CheckUp should not replace a visit to your vet, or annual routine visits. CheckUp is ideal for in-between routine visits, or, for pet owners that require frequent urine collection by their vet.

  • Can I give a urine sample collected using CheckUp kit to my vet?

Yes. CheckUp is an ideal method for urine collection which will not change any urine parameters. Simply transfer the collected urine in the vial to your vet as soon as possible, or refrigerate the sample for up to 48 hours and bring to your vet.

  • How much CheckUp Sand do I need to use to collect a urine sample?

The quantity of sand provided is designed to create a thin layer at the bottom of a standard litter box used at home. Unlike regular litter, only a very thin layer is required to obtain compliance as sand is the natural environment for cats, so they are comfortable and respond quickly.

  • Is this a test I can conduct at home?

Certainly. CheckUp is designed for at home use. Simply place the sand in your litter box at home, collect the urine using the tools, dip the strip, read results, and transfer the sample to your veterinarian for further analysis.

  • Do cats like using the CheckUp sand instead of litter?

Cats love the natural feel, texture, and scent of CheckUp sand. You can expect almost 100% compliance.

  • What happens if my cat covers the sand?

If the urine is covered by the sand, the sample can still be extracted just by moving the sand to the side using the pipette. The droplet will reappear on the surface, making collection easy.

  • Once urine is collected, how should I handle it?

Make sure the tube is sealed. You should give the collected sample to your veterinarian as soon as possible. However, urine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours

  •  Can I use the sample for full analysis in a lab?

Yes. Your veterinarian can use this sample for a full analysis in a lab, if properly stored in a refrigerator, for up to 48 hours.

  • What should I do if a test result is positive?

Please call your veterinarian to schedule an appointment to learn more. We also suggest bringing them the sample you collected

  • Can I use CheckUp to regularly monitor my cat?

Yes. CheckUp is ideal if you have to monitor your cat’s health regularly through urine. This is common for felines suffering from Diabetes and Kidney Conditions. Please visit our blog section for more information.

  • What happens if I did not read the results in time?

Your kit includes two identical testing strips. Please conduct the test again using the second strip.

  • What is the best way to read the results card?

Because the colors on the testing strip continuously change, we recommend to circle the color that is present on the card at the designated reading time.

  • What happens if a droplet moves to the side of the sand?

If the litter box was thoroughly cleaned before the sand was placed inside, a sample can still be collected. Simply collect the urine from where it is with the pipette.

  • How long will the urine stay on the of the sand?

The urine will stay on top of the sand until it evaporates. We recommend collecting the urine sample as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of outside factors affecting the sample. Additionally, test results can differ – for example, over time the water evaporating from the urine can cause pH levels to change.

  • Can CheckUp sand be reused?

CheckUp is a single-use kit. The easily disposable products should be discarded after a simple urine sample has been collected.

  • Does CheckUp sand change any urine parameters?

No, CheckUp sand does not change any of the properties of the urine sample collected. This product is based on our highly successful veterinary product called Kit4Cat (, which has been used by vets for the last 5 years in over 44 countries. Extensive studies have been conducted and there is no chemical reaction between the hydrophobic sand and any of the urine that beads up on top of it. In addition, several well-known veterinarians and research facilities have conducted their own studies and have submitted multiple samples to commercial laboratories. All urinalysis results were identical between their invasive collection methods and our hydrophobic sand. To view this study please Click Here

  • There is a fine dust covering the sample. Does it change the urines

properties or response to the testing strip?

No, the dust is from the hydrophobic sand and will not change the urine sample properties in any way. This dust is created by the granules of sand rubbing against each other. Please reference the previous question for further details about how the sand will not change parameters. Additionally, if you transfer the sample to the vet, the presence of dust will not resemble any item they may be looking for in the sample.

  • What happens if my cat eats some of the sand?

CheckUp sand is non-toxic and safe. No harm will come to your cat from digesting the sand, and if any digestion occurs, it is not significant amounts which can create any negative effect

  • Is CheckUp environmentally friendly?

Yes, CheckUp sand is made of natural ingredients, which are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

  • How do I dispose of the sand?

CheckUp sand is natural, non-toxic, and the coating is biodegradable. Simply dispose of the sand as you would other rubbish.

  • Is CheckUp ethical?

Yes, CheckUp is extremely ethical like all of Coastline Global's products. Because it is noninvasive, this product maintains the highest possible standards of animal welfare.

  • What are the parameters featured on the diagnostic test strip?

CheckUp parameters include: Glucose (detects high glucose levels which can be a result of Diabetes, Obesity, Other), Protein (Kidney Conditons), pH (Urinary Tract Infection), Blood (reflects a condition referred to as Hematuria which can have multiple implications)

  • What does CheckUp detect?

CheckUp is designed to provide a window into the general wellness of your cat. The carefully selected parameters detect the most common issues affecting cats of all ages including High Glucose, Urinary Tract Infection, Kidney Conditions, and Blood in the Urine.

  • Can I save unused sand for another test?

The sand is sterile, but once the bag is opened and exposed to air, it has a shelf-life of 72 hours.

However, follow ups should not be neglected.  We highly recommend using a kit to ensure you cats illness has been treated sufficiently.

Reading the  Results card

We recommend having a clock on hand and a pen, so you can circle the color present at exactly 30 and 60 seconds respectively for each parameter

  • The results card is located inside the box. Detach this before conducting the test for easy reading and color comparison
  • The colors on the test strip continuously change, so reading the results at the times designated on the results card is of the utmost importance
  • Once you have dipped the strip in the collected sample for two seconds, and all four squares having been submerged, quickly place the strip on the reading card for close reference to the color chart
  • Since the colors change, only the color present at 30 or 60 seconds respectively will reflect the result
  • At 30 seconds, circle the color that most closely resembles the result present on the diagnostic strip for the first 3 parameters
  • Repeat this at 60 seconds for the last parameter (blood)
  • CheckUp is not designed to diagnose a problem or to replace a visit to your veterinarian
  • We recommend you call your veterinarian for more information and consultation on the results of your test, positive or negative
  • A positive result for any of the above parameters can have serious implications for the wellness of your cat which should be discussed with your veterinarian
